“So what do we do next?” Emile asked, spreading her skirts as she sat on a chair.

“Good question, the information at hand proves you were murdered. Otherwise, your body would have been buried,” Henrietta said and winced. Delicacy was not her strong point. Emile tilted her chin in acknowledgement.

“Maybe we can return to bed?” Melisandre asked, yawning.

“A good idea, especially for expectant mothers,” Sabine said, eyeing Henrietta.

“I shall keep watch,” Emile said and ushered them to bed. Once she was sure they were settled, Emile began pacing the lodge. Was she really the reason that Peerson had murdered them all? It was unbelievable and unpalatable, to say the least. Her sense of honour was highly offended. Many men were rejected in marriage offers and didn’t turn to kidnap or murder.

Emile had loved her father dearly but hated the fact that the money he’d left her had caused such trouble. She’d been hounded the moment mourning ended, and if not for Henry’s constant presence, who knew what may have happened. Alfred had let it be known far and wide how rich and tasty a morsel she was. Emile had known he was looking for a husband he could control so he could access her money. It wasn’t enough Alfred had inherited her father’s title or his small but tastefully decorated manor and several farms. No, Alfred had wanted everything, and she, his younger sister, had denied him.

Emile hadn’t enjoyed being at odds with her brother. When she’d been younger, she’d looked up to Alfred. But his discontentment with life grew, and as it did, his bitterness turned sour, and she bore the brunt of it. Despite having generous and loving parents, Alfred longed to be more than a mere baron and had surrounded himself in London with lords and ladies. He’d turned his back on what he sneeringly referred to as countrified society and his parents simple yet dignified living.

Alfred had nearly choked the first time they met at a ball. Emile had been dressed elegantly and simply, taking advice from Nicholas. Where other young women wore over styled dresses, Emile had stood out and been swamped with offers for a dance. Fully aware of her social sphere, Emile had stood firm with the Rakehell Six behind her. Frustrated suitors soon learned that any effort to compromise her or force her hand was met by one of the Rakehell Six men.

Emile had bloomed in society, and many were jealous of her easy-going ways and sense of humour. Except for Alfred and his friends. Many of them tried to single her out, listening to Alfred’s vitriol about her dowry. Little did Alfred know their parents intended to leave her with even more money. She’d been cornered at every ball or musical, going to the theatre or opera, become a nightmare unless one of the Rakehell Six was present. When Henry first appeared and shown a quiet interest, Emile had heaved a sigh of relief.

He had courted her under the watchful eye of her chosen brothers, and arranging assignations had been impossible.
